Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Wed 15th February 12, 10:26pm Sighting location: Y Gors, Trecastle. Sighting date: 11/02/12
Made an overdue dusk visit to Y Gors last Saturday, at the back end of the cold snap and Snipe numbers were low at just c 9 birds and there seemed to be only a couple of Teal. A Water Rail-like call was heard but was partly drowned out by traffic so I could not be sure. On the subject of Water Rails I received information from a Defynnog based shooter that single Water Rails were flushed from a wet area SE of Pentrefelin village "in a previous winter" (so likely to be within Atlas) and flushed from Felincamlais pool, Mynydd Illtyd, about a fortnight ago (so late Jan 2012). Both these sites receive coverage but have no previous WR records (the other two MI pools, Traeth Mawr and Bach have not held calling birds since before the two severe 09/10, 10/11 winters) so this highlights that without flushing by dogs this species often goes unnoticed and may be much more widespread in the county in winter than we think (cf recent Beulah garden record).

Took the kids kite flying on Brecfa Common where 3 Skylark were singing. Down on Brecfa Pool 12 Teal, 1 Coot and 10 BH Gull.

Great Grey Shrike hunting for an hour on Mynydd Illtyd 9.50 - 10.50. It favored an area of gorse 300 yards east of the mountain centre car park along the fence line where it used a preferred hawthorn for a look out. Quite a few walkers and dogs passed within 50 yards of it without it flushing. Also 2 Skylark singing, 3 Red Kite and 2 Lapwing feeding.

A male Merlin flew fast towards town at 4.00 as I waited at the roadworks traffic lights beside the canal in Brecon. At 4.30 an Iceland Gull was on the Lake.

Entry added by: Bob & Gwil Griffiths on Tue 14th February 12, 07:09pm Sighting location: Llangors Lake. Sighting date: 14/2/12
For about a minute we watched a flying Bittern over the Penorth end of Llangors Lake - landing behind lakeside reeds. This from the lovely new bird hide at about 1.30 p.m.

Over - Raven (2), Buzzard (1), Song Thrush (1). Haven't recorded a Greenfinch in the garden now for 5 weeks.

SN92K was the only tetrad in SN92 without any winter coverage so I attempted to get in there today but unfortunately the low freezing fog made life difficult. 4 Raven, 3 Carrion Crow, 3 Wrens and a Siskin were recorded in an hour and a quarter in SN9421. The freezing fog started to lift just as I was exiting this square. Yesterday, 2 C Crow and a Raven were the only species seen in two hours in SN92A. The results of freezing rain provided some interest with conifers shedding icicles and thousands of grass stems coated in a thick layer of ice which then snapped under their own weight as the sun melted their bases.

The Iceland Gull came in at 16:30 with a group of predominately BH Gull giving good flight views that enabled me to appreciate just how pale this bird is. Also in the roost an impressive 15 Herring, 1 YL and 2 GBB Gull. The pair of Ruff were still feeding at Llangasty and 43 Cormorant were in their roost.
