Whitethroat singing near Y Byddwn Nature Reserve. No sign of last years pair of spotted flycatcher on reserve yet?

7 Swifts back to their breeding site in Pennorth tonight. I was beginning to wonder whether they were going to show up. Earlier, 19 spp in ffridd and along the northern ridge of Bl Mtns, highlights being Hobby taking insects over heather, 3 Red Kites, 3 Cuckoos in song and a 4th in front of the car at Pengenffordd, 3 terr. male Wheatear, several Yellowhammer. 5 Lapwing nests in arable crops in Tallylyn all predated at the egg stage.

This morning a Whitethroat was singing from a large area of gorse along with a Cuckoo and Green Woodpecker calling nearby. Lots of Linnet and Willow Warbler around and Meadow Pipits were feeding young still in the nest. Along Camlais Brook there were 2 Four-spotted Chasers with another two on the main pool.

Hawfinch flying from neighbours feeders into an oak tree to the rear of our garden in the village. Seen a few times this morning. My first house record in 16 years. After a slow start Swift numbers have increased with 18 over the village today. House Martins are well down with only a single pair returned so far.

32 spp today in glorious sunshine. 5 male Whinchats in song (2 fems seen), pr Stonechat, Kestrel, Red Kite, Grey Wagtail and single Chiffchaff, Blackcaps and Garden Warbler. Tawny Owl male repeatedly calling from 4pm. In passing, new 10km square/site record for Green Longhorn Moth (Adela reaumurella) with 8 males dancing over Hawthorn.

Male Pied Flycatcher singing well on former breeding territory.18 days later than 2017. Two Willow Tit territories with singing males. 4 Bluetail Damselflies.
