Often the case - you go for a target species, or on a hunch for a new find, and something else of equal interest shows up! Checked the river at Pencelli last evening - and heard a Little Owl. Then pieced it all together. The last record from the Manest - Scethrog barns territory nearby was 8 years ago, 2011 so thought they had died out like so many birds in Wales. Takes me back 25-30 years when LO were reasonably well-spaced down the Usk valley between Sennybridge and Glangrwyney, as most I found then were initially heard in hot weather in the 2nd half of July. Funny that...

9 Oystercatcher, a kingfisher and a pair of Moorhen with 6 fluffy young on the point.

9 Common Sandpiper and 2 Dunlin at Talybont. 2 Mute Swan with 6 cygnets on the canal near Pencelli.

Notice of renovation works: BBNP have informed me of work planned to replace timbers on the walkway & stairs will take place this coming week 22nd-26th July. The hide will largely remain open to the public throughout (follow site access instructions), but expect some disturbance should you visit.

Passage waders in heavy rain late p/m - 5 Dunlin, single C Sandpiper and juv LRPlover. Also 60 Mallard, 164 Canada Geese and a single Greylag, 2 L Grebe, 10 Teal, 27 Tufted Duck. 4 Gt-Cr Grebe included a pair with 2x day-old chicks partly-hidden on the female's back.

19.30pm waterfowl count. 178 Mute Swan and broods of 3 and 4 cygnets seen, 250+ Mallard, 2 Tufted Duck, 1 Shelduck on Crannog Island, 110 Coot including 10-12 youngsters, 9 adult Great-crested Grebe with two almost independent youngsters, pair Lapwing with 2-3 fledged young on the Point, 30 LBBGUlls, 1 GBBG.

Little Egret. While driving across bridge, paused half way across (Brec/Rads) as we spotted two birds flying downstream towards us. As they passed by we could see that they were a Little Egret closely followed by a B H Gull, The Egret under the bridge below the car,the gull over.
