.......and still the Starlings come. Estimated roost in Llangasty reedbeds tonight of 150,000+. All came in 16.15 - 16.40pm and settled initially over ca. 3 tennis court sized area of reeds right in front of the hide, before slowly redistributing around the western shoreline from 16.40pm. SpHawk and Goshawk made strikes at them. Prior to their arrival, 30 Goldeneye and 210 Tufted Duck & 1 Pochard counted.

A 200-250 strong mixed finch flock flew across the valley today, seen as I was working in my garden. Later there was a male Brambling in my garden with a small Chaffinch flock. There must be more Brambling and maybe a Hawfinch, (given the current irruption that is taking place), in that big flock. They look to be feeding on the stubble fields around Bwlch and Cathedine.

100+ Redwings have already completely stripped my holly trees of berries over the last few days. Very noisy til the Sparrowhawk put in an appearance then deathly hush followed by frantic scattering in all directions. Today surprised to see a pair of Blackcaps feeding on Cornus berries outside the front door.

No luck at the Hawfinch site this morning but the fields were being cut by a very big and noisy ride-on lawn mower. In addition to this there were three sets of barking dogs with equally noisy owners calling them. I abandoned it as a bad job but not before seeing six Bullfinches, four males and two females. A few more good cold and frosty days are needed to bring the leaves down and improve visibility. Later driving up to Buckland Hill there were four Brambling feeding where the two hairy pigs are kept half way up the tarmc road.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Mon 6th November 17, 04:59pm Sighting location: Fan Bwlch Chwyth Quarry, Senni. Sighting date: 06/11/17
A female/juvenile Black Redstart was present at Senni Quarry this afternoon (up to 15:00). A pale (but not white) wing panel suggested a juvenile male to me. Fairly good views eventually but too gloomy to attempt a photograph. Also a juvenile Ring Ouzel on the track up, a single Raven and a Wren. Near Crai res a Woodcock was flushed, a female Kestrel and 75+ Fieldfare

Entry added by: Andrew King on Sun 5th November 17, 09:34pm Sighting location: Llandefalle Hill. Sighting date: 05/11/17
At last, some winter thrushes. 650 Redwing in 15 minutes moving west up out of the Wye valley over Brechfa Pool. 250 Fieldfare on Llandefalle Hill (E) above Ponde, and another 150 at Pentrenewbury Farm. 125 Golden Plover settled on the hill too, with a pr Stonechat and just one Snipe.

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Sun 5th November 17, 08:26pm Sighting location: Brecon Beacons. Sighting date: 05/11/17
1 Red Grouse, 1 Kestrel, 1 Sprawk, 1 Red Kite, 2 Buzzard, 1 Raven, 4 Crow, 2 Magpie and 3 Bullfinch feeding on heather looked out of place. 88 Fieldfare were heading north.

Forgot to mention a Kingfisher, 42 Redwing at Hawfinch site.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Sat 4th November 17, 02:22pm Sighting location: Sennybridge. Sighting date: 04/11/17
A Kingfisher flew from Usk/Senni confluence, probably taking an overland short-cut towards the rest of the Senni river. A Marsh Tit was at feeders at one of the village petrol stations/cafes. In Brecon, up to 5 Hawfinches showed reasonably well at the site mentioned below between 11 and noon.

10 - 14 Hawfinch within the grove of Hornbeams, but mobile. Plenty of seed there, especially at mid-height, so should hold the birds a while.
