Message for Stephen Attkins. Thanks for this valuable record. Red grouse have begun to re-colonised this area in the last few years, presumably from the population on the Carmarthen side of the Black Mountain range. You have done well to see birds as so far I have only found fresh droppings and some footprints in snow after I was alerted to their presence by a relative who hefts sheep in that area. Hopefully the County Recorder can contact you directly for an estimated grid reference (please do not post exact position directly on here as I think we all underestimate the potential of this species to fall victim to indiscriminate hunting).

11am walking up to Lynda Y Fan Fawr from the old Trecastle road and 3 red grouse flushed up just in front of me. Had to do a double take as I was not aware there were any in the area. I have seen them in Scotland so can confirm the sighting was correct. Made my day. Not sure if there is a site to report the sighting ?

Female Sparrowhawk and a Hobby this morning. Meanwhile in my homemade hedgehog house just a yard away the hedgehog is heard snoring. Breakfast in the garden is proving to be very worthwhile.

Prior to Tawny Owl survey there were 200 to 300 hirundines over Pencelli, mostly swallows, perhaps the 20 I saw earlier had joined them. 50 of these flew south east just after 8pm. I heard 1 male and 2 female tawnies from 8.45 to 9.05pm

Little grebe on the Brecon leisure pond was a surprise this evening

Entry added by: Steve Wilce on Tue 4th September 18, 11:28am Sighting location: River Usk. Sighting date: 03/09/18
River Usk 03/09/18. Monsoon-like conditions. Two Kingfishers in the area, one youngster and one adult female. The youngster frequently perching in front of my hide to give excellent views despite the rain. Two Dippers were feeding and interacting literally one yard from me and numbers of Grey Wagtails were feeding along the river bank. Although I was sheltered under a dense overhanging Willow, my hide still took a battering and it just about kept the rain out, it's drip drying in a shed as I type - However, I took a right royal soaking packing my kit away and running, (well, moving my legs quicker than usual), back to the car. All part of the fun!

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Sun 2nd September 18, 09:56pm Sighting location: Llangorse Lake. Sighting date: 02/09/18
In front of the bird hide this evening 3 Pochard, 4 Tufted, 2 Little Grebe and a few Wigeon and Gadwall.
