A day with Long-tailed Tits. Yesterday morning during a WBBS walk up the Usk at Scethrog (by arrangement) I soon chanced upon a busy pair collecting food in riverside willows. Every two minutes they flew down to a low willow branch where 9 fledglings just left the nest were tightly lined up in a row; 4 tails one side, 5 the other. A different juv was fed at every visit. Also 5 C Sandpiper terrs, 5 female Goosanders but no broods, 2 Kingfisher one carrying food, 3 LEgret and single Oystercatcher. 18 singing Garden Warbler was a record count in >20 yrs here. In the evening on the Hay riverside walk another pair of LT Tits were watched gathering food - this time to serve ?number of tiny chicks in a classic nest constructed of lichen & cobwebs in dangling Ivy stems only 1 metre off the ground. A pair of Chaffinches were building a nest in ivy in a nearby tree. Yet more good reasons NOT to remove Ivy from trees!
