Single House Martin at Libanus this morning.

Nice walk today west of Pontfaen. Around Maen Richard had groups of 9,13 (flushed unfortunately) and 8 Golden Plover, single Snipe, Red Kite. Only 4 Mipit and 1 Skylark left up there. Unharvested commercial spring barley field nr Goetre held 45 House Sparrow, 5 Yellowhammer, 20 BTits and 15 Chaffinch. A few fields further on a recent sown cereal field held 10 Stock Dove, 10 Skylark, 125 Chaffinch with a Brambling, 20 Goldfinch - and 35 Yelllowhammer the biggest surprise! Few Redwing and Fieldfare about.

A late Swallow was at Libanus, then up at the forestry 21 Fieldfare, 36 Redwing, 45 Siskin and 2 Willow Tit were the highlights.

After a record wet 24hrs (88mm = 3.5 inches in Pennorth) the skies cleared late-pm to allow a roost count. Lake much higher now! Best were 20 Gadwall, 6 Goldeneye, 1 Goosander,19 GCGrebe, Kingfisher. 400 Starling, 20 Teal and 35 Snipe flushed by a juv Goshawk quartering low over the Point. Roost counts included 64 Cormrants, 1350 LBBGulls, 10 H Gulls, 300 BH Gulls, 2 GBBG, 15000 Starlings south into 'South Africa' and 150+ Pied Wagtails gathered on the point shoreline pre-roost. Stonechat and Cettis Warbler in the wood.

First Redwings of the year feeding on berries at the bottom of the garden. Other birds of interest, and a first for our garden, a single Grey Wag, briefly at 0830 together with a Song Thrush and a lone Greenfinch. At least 1, possibly 2, Marsh, 34 Long Tailed, 12 Blue, 2 Great, 4 Coal Tits. 2 Nuthatch, 12 Chaffinch, Wren, 4 Blackbirds, 1 Robin. And a mini murmuration of 87 Starlings.

Three Tawny Owls in our front garden this evening at 19.00 Probably young displaced birds. Great views as they flew low around us chasing each other while calling and then taking turns to perch in full view on our Broadband/Telephone pole.
