Brief visit this AM. 148 Mute Swan included two ringed birds - see 'Ringing Page'. Also a juv Black Tern over the western lily-pads - not quite the earliest return date but a good fortnight ahead of the usual passage period.

Entry added by: John Harper on Thu 14th July 11, 06:38pm Sighting location: SO21N. Sighting date: 13/07/11
Last BBS in this tetrad produced 37 spp. Mum and 4 juv Goosander swam across and down the river (Usk) from modern Monmouthshire to Powys and from vc42 to vc35 precisely. Common Sandpiper still present at the Glangrwyney Bend but quiet; also a Kingfisher flew through both sets of counties as for Goosander. Perhaps most interesting were 3 Sand Martins flying to an obvious monolony - a colony (>2 birds) but with only one tunnel showing a good deal of whitewash - in vc42 but also in modern Monmouthshire. Work that out ! They were also there on 4th May but I thought they were just beating up and down a good foodpatch. What was very striking was the apparent absence of several common species as they were no longer singing or otherwise showing themselves.
