Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Fri 1st July 11, 07:16pm Sighting location: Craig-y-nos Country Park. Sighting date: 30/06/11
25 species around the park. Best were 7 occupied House Martin nest's (5 on the visitor centre, 2 on the castle), 73+4 Mallard and a Mute Swan on the fishpond, 3 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Green Woodpecker, and on the various wetland areas a juv Dipper, 4 Grey Wagtail and 1-2 Common Sandpiper.

Entry added by: Andrew King on Fri 1st July 11, 09:50am Sighting location: Moel Prysgau & Nantystalwyn. Sighting date: 30/06/11
To attempt to get the Atlas species list for SN86 up, I pounded the forest roads in Moel Prysgau, N of Llyn Brianne along the Ceredigion border. Limited success with only Crossbill and LRedpoll added. What surprised me was the number of Blackcap in just a fraction of that commercial conifer forestry comprising clearfell & <25 yr old conifers - 30 singing males! Could not compete with 90+ singing Chaffinch, but Blackcap was easily the 2nd commonest species up there. Robin, Wren, Coal Tit, Goldcrest in low numbers and localised. 5 territories of Whinchat in 2km of upper Towy valley valley between Pont Dolgoch & Carreg y Fran. A fresh dead House Martin on a forest road must have dropped off the radiator grille of a forest vehicle when 4-5 miles from the nearest colony.

Little Owl flew through Cwmdu campsite at 05.00 yesterday morning hotly pursued by a host of shrieking small birds including Blackbirds and Great Tits. Also two Curlew circling and calling over fields between Tretower and Cwmdu on Monday morning (27/12/11).

Entry added by: Griff on Tue 28th June 11, 08:23pm Sighting location: Llangors Lake-Langasty side. Sighting date: 28/06/11
This evening there were three Red shanks, three Common Sandpipers, a Yellow Wagtail and a Curlew.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Mon 27th June 11, 11:55pm Sighting location: Usk reservoir. Sighting date: 27/04/11
Visited the Usk river inflow area of the Usk reservoir during misty conditions that came in this evening. Best record was of a Kingfisher on the river (my first this year, anywhere). Also there were two Great Black-backed Gulls, a single LBB Gull, 5 Common Sandpipers (1 in Breconshire) and a fly-over Curlew. Earlier, breeding of Sedge Warbler was confirmed at Trecastle. The importance of bus shelters for Swallow breeding in the west was highlighted by finding 2 nests in a single shelter at Trecastle (5 and 1 eggs with both nests already dropping stained) and Aberbran (3 fledglings). I think Swallow numbers are up this year as birds keep popping up at unusual sites. Also 12 mobbed a single Sparrowhawk in Sennybridge yesterday evening.

Message for Jeff Butcher. Depending on which bird you saw, Cape Shelduck is the nearest fit, but there is a bit of Australian Shelduck blood there too! Complicated further by the fact that a pair of these oddities bred there in 2010 rearing 6 young (& may well be doing so again in 2011), so they might be spread across Wales/UK by now. No idea from whence they came.
