Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Sat 23rd April 11, 05:17pm Sighting location: SN92A. Sighting date: 23/04/11
SN92A has only received minimal breeding season Atlas coverage and I set out to change this today. A 3 hour visit produced 17 species including Willow Warbler, Tree Pipit, Cuckoo, Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Goldcrest, Skylark (22), Meadow Pipit (43). The only Wheatears recorded were Greenland types well away from suitable nest sites (A Wheatear territory was picked up on a previous visit however). Lepidoptera action was 5 Green Hairstreak and 5 Emperor Moths trying to mate with a female with damaged wings. Many more Emperor Moths were on the wing throughout the survey.

1 curlew on the Eppynt just off the Builth to Brecon road. At Coed y Wern, Pwllgloyw, birds on territories included 5 singing redstarts, 1 tree pipit, 2 linnets, but no pied flys so far. Also fly-pasts from 2 kites, sparrowhawk and 2 redpoll.

Driving the Senni - Crai reservoir road this afternoon and noticed a falcon fly low over the road. I stopped the car and was treated to close fly pasts of a Hobby successfully hawking insects. By the time I had got the camera out is disappeared completely but I then heard the call of a Curlew!. I walked up the slope and a pair flew further up the field. On the way back a Snipe flushed out of a slow stream and appeared to display as it flew back to cover,

I fell flat on my face whilst BBSing in a bog and dislodged a Snipe! I found 3 Reed Buntings scattered around the Tirabad end of the range this morning- they seem to be more common than previously in the hills- more surviving winter at garden feeders? Otherwise lots of Skylarks and Willow Warblers, a couple of Whinchat, a singing Lesser Redpoll at the rifle range and Whitethroat nearby.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Thu 21st April 11, 10:50pm Sighting location: Pentrefelin. Sighting date: 21/04/11
2 male Tawny Owls calling near Cefn-rhosan-fach. Nearby at Glynmeddig a call was heard that I suspect was a Little Owl. The call was heard 3 times around 10.00 p.m. and was like that of a Buzzard but with a faster, harsher delivery. More investigation needed I think as this would be an outlier from the known, declining distribution/population.

Back on the Atlas TTV trail today, access provided by Glanusk Estate. The park yielded a male Yellow Wagtail (presume migrant), 3 Goosander, Moorhen and 20+ new Sand Martin nest-holes. Myarth woodland had superb numbers of warblers in song - 15 Wood, 30 Willow, 9 Chiffchaff, 20 Blackcap but only 1 Garden Warbler.

Entry added by: Andrew Dally on Thu 21st April 11, 07:20pm Sighting location: Crychan (Finger post). Sighting date: 21/04/11
Singing males (Chaffinch, Goldcrest, Siskin, Wren, Robin, Willow Warbler, Chiff Chaff, Blackcap & Tree Pipit) Also 4 Crossbill, 2 Jay, Bullfinch

Entry added by: John Lloyd on Thu 21st April 11, 09:21am Sighting location: Cwm Chwefru. Sighting date: 20/04/11
BBS up the Chwefru Valley- Ring Ouzel singing from cliffs- harassed by Buzzard. This is the second year in 17 that ring ouzel have been recorded on this BBS.And that probably reflects the pattern of usage of these "outlying" sites by Ring ouzel. I don't do this BBS every year- I find others to do it but they don't stick so after a couple of years, I'm back doing it. Two new species this year- Reed Bunting (good) Canada Goose (not so good). But the major surprise was a Chaffinch nest with 2 eggs in an smallish patch of gorse at 1300 ft. This is rather early as was the nearby Skylark nest with 4 eggs.

6 H. Martins circling around house this p.m, first of the year. No Swifts at Llangamarch church as yet. Completed my rounds of c200 nest boxes today, and the most advanced of any box was N3 stage.
