17 Wheatear (only 2 of which were female) all favouring the short pasture on the western side of the road near the end of the tarmac below Gamrhiw. There could well have been double this number as much of the pasture is hidden from view. 2 Green Woodpecker, 2 Redstart, 2 Stock Dove, 2 Stonechat (males), 50 Meadow Pipit, Reed bunting, Greater spotted woodpecker, 2 Cuckoo, lots of Willow warbler and a very light buzzard (not far from being completely white including its back).

At the lake this afternoon at least 2 Sedge Warbler were singing with 6+ Reed Warbler between Llangasty car park and the hide. An Oystercatcher was at Llangasty where a Sparrowhawk was hunting. The drake Scaup was in his usual corner near the hide and there was a female Goldeneye, 7 Gadwall, 5 Tufted and 3 Teal. Blackcap song was prolific at Ty Mawr woods with good numbers of Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and a Redstart.

Two BTO matters: 1. The new edition of State of Birds in Wales is out. Go to http://www.bto.org/sites/default/files/u42/downloads/state-birds-wales-2010.pdf to read. If you are a surveyor and would like a hard copy, please contact me. 2. Following the departure of a senior surveyor to the sunnier cliimes of Aberystwyth, I have more surplus BBS sites than usual. If you would like to try your hand at a BBS, please get in contact: vacant squares are: SN 8844 SN 8849 SN 9730 SO 0712 SO 0916 SO 1429 SO1920 Any takers? The commitment is 3 visits ( one to set it up and two survey visits) each of which should take comfortably less than 2 hours. Contact me at the_lloyds@dsl.pipex.com if interested. John

Up on the tops today there were few birds but a mammalian first in my 23 Brecs years!. A Roebuck burst from deep heather when I was scanning in the other direction! Had my attention not been drawn to faint clicking behind me, I would have missed it completely. Clicking was the rear hooves clicking the fore dew-claws as it bound off at speed.
