Spectacular numbers of Sand Martins (2000+) at the lake yesterday evening with 10s of House Martins in amongst them. An approaching heavy shower could have dropped other species but I decided I had had enough of being rained on for one day (i.e. a morning session on Fan Hir that wasn't nice)

As dawn broke, I think the cold put a brake on bird activity. Calling Stock Dove and Green Woodpecker, then good numbers of residents, Blackcap & Chiffchaff & Redstart (2) got singing. Later, a single House Martin returned to eaves by the lychgate, and one Swallow further up the lane. Dipper feeding young in the nest at Millbrook.

A dusk visit to Gors Llwyn (SN81K) gave reeling Grasshopper warbler, 2 drumming Snipe and a Barn Owl (screeching, then seen). Significantly a displaying Lapwing was also heard in the distance but on SN81K.

Entry added by: Steve Jones on Fri 8th April 11, 09:10pm Sighting location: Llanwrthwl. Sighting date: 08/04/11
I have never seen so many Common Redstart. 9 males on a walk from Llanwrthwl to the cattle grid at Penrhos (1 mile up hill!). 6 of these were within 100m of the cattlegrid. At one point there were 4 scrapping in the same silver birch. All of these birds are a few days earlier than usual. Earlier a Linnet by the village was unusual.
