Further thoughts on the Carrion Crow preying on Starlings - see the gallery for my report yesterday. ..... Again today, I observed a CC diving into a flock of starlings and catching one. Has anyone else seen or heard of this behaviour? It is not due to the lack of carrion, there are plenty of sheep carcasses in the vicinity (above 1000' rule) . And having not seen a CC ever eat anything bigger than a snail or a chick that was live I feel this behaviour is possibly carried out by a rogue Crow. ( The starlings are caught unaware as they don't see crows nearby as predators from my obs.. and today there were 3 sat on fences next to the starlings before this one dived in)

Ref. Andrew's suggestion on 13th about Peter's post of the same day : : : could it not be that one of the Nuthatch pair is more nervous feeding in close proximity to other birds and takes seed away to a favourite perch to devour ? . . . . I have observed this individual difference in feeding with Blue, Great and Coal Tits as well as Greenfinch, Nuthatch and Greater-spotted Woodpecker at a friends' place at Wickwar (Glos) for many years. Here the nut and seed feeders are 5m above ground level at 1st floor level (on a valley slope) and the flight line is direct to/from a large dense pear tree that acts as a refuge.

Entry added by: Andrew King/Griff on Sun 13th February 11, 10:04pm Sighting location: WeBS sites. Sighting date: 13/02/11
WeBS duck-count highlights. Talybont Reservoir = 8 LGrebe, 16 Goldeneye and 5 Goosander. Pentwyn = 5 Pochard, 2 Goosander. Pontsticill = 1279 Herring Gull, 34 LBBGull & 1 GBBGull. Single GCGrebe back at both Talybont & Ponsticill. At Llangorse yesterday, as per usual in February, numbers of waterfowl reduced since mid-Jan apart from increases for Goosander (62) and Goldeneye (64). Re Nuthatch - this species regularly caches food away, so what Peter saw was a bird wisely taking food away to a favourite store should winter make a return. In the snow in December I watched a Nuthatch at Talybont Res'r dig down through snow/leaf litter to successfully find its autumn store.

We ahve had a pair of nuthatches coming to our bird feeding table for the past 4/5 days, 1 eats at the table , the other always collects a beak full of seed and then flys off in exactly the same direction. I looked up breeding times and April is indicated, can any one elucidate please ?
