Low and behold.... in honour of Steve finding Hawfinches in SN96V, the bird of the day is Hawfinch. And the map has a dot in SN96... (the last dot at the top left of the diagonal line of records)
Well done Steve!

Sighting location: as post. Sighting date: 30/12/10
Over 200 Fieldfare around Glasfynydd forest, in the fields adjacent on its northern edge. Grey wagtails on dam wall of usk res and the most strangest site, 2 merlin flying together at about 20m above the ground, not hunting... one seemd to be trying to catch the other so probable after a share of a kill.

Sighting location: Sarnau and Llangorse Lake. Sighting date: 30/12/10
Single Teal, Woodcock and Coal Tit added to Roving Records within SO03B Battle Hill (south) this morning. This afternoon at Llangorse the Bittern flushed, and a Cettis sang 'cettia-cettia', and probably a second one making contact calls. It is still a struggle for birds there though as the ice is 6cms thick still despite day 4 of the 'thaw'.

Sighting location: Trembyd southern flank. (SN990610) Sighting date: 30/12/10
Whilst doing the SN96V tetrad in fog this morning the highlight was a Hawfinch near Rhos y beddau - associating with a group of thrushes most of which were fieldfare. 21 species seen (only 4 on the fog bound upland bit). These included Goldcrest, Long tailed Tit, Wren, Bullfinch, Redwing, Song Thrush, Raven (3) and a singing Dunnock. Flying around near the summit of Trembyd in zero visibility were a flock of fieldfare - numbers of which seem to have increased over the last couple of days here. A Snipe made up the numbers - flushed from a dry area on the flank of the hill.

Sighting location: Pwllgloyw. Sighting date: 27/12/10
Enlisted my brother to have a look for woodcock at dusk. We quickly flushed 1 in a 80m walk along the small stream running through the "wern" of Coed-y-Wern. As it flew off along the stream, we stopped there so as not to flush it again, but there is lots more suitable habitat in that patch!
Also, 1+ willow tit as usual on the feeders at the farm, but no tree sparrows so far this winter (had been regular for the last few years), and very few greenfinches too.
Various hungry-looking kites, and a sparrowhawk trying hard for a blackbird.
