Glasfynydd Forest: an influx of Redpoll. there were around a dozen yesterday, as per photo in gallery. Today, 10th December, there have been many seperate flocks, hard to tell if some were the same flocks moving around but probably around a dozen seen with around 6-8 birds in each. Its become a noisey place with that rasping grind tempered with the tuneful whistle! ....also 1 greenfinch on the feeder on the 8th.

A barn owl flew out from the barn here, where there were also three pellets. I have been away for a month, so there has been no disturbance during the cold spell. One flew out of the owl box in the barn about a year ago. There has been no sign of them nesting there, so it is probably a roost in cold weather. Now that I have refilled the feeders, I have seen several marsh tits and blue tits, a great tit, a robin, a blackbird, a hedge sparrow, a nuthatch, a female greater spotted woodpecker and a female chaffinch. No greenfinches have been seen today. and there were two sick ones here in the summer.

2 x TTV today around Bwlch & Ffawyddog. The former mostly below 'Kestrel Inn' gave 4 Lapwing on sunny banks (first I have seen for ages so no apparent cold weather movements?), 2 Teal & a Woodcock in frozen woodland, 3 Marsh Tits, Red Kite. The other TTV around Fedw Farm gave masses of released Pheasants, but one of their cover crops did have 50 Chaffinch, 3 Reed Bunting. a Goldfinch & 5 Dunnock on Fat Hen seedheads.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Tue 7th December 10, 08:59pm Sighting location: Y Gors, Trecastle. Sighting date: 06/12/10
A dusk visit yesterday indicated that only 5 Snipe were present, all flushed from an relatively unfrozen spring area at the edge of the site. Only two individuals left the site completely at dusk and this is easily the lowest count at the site. 9 Teal were present in the same area. A Water Rail called once which was surprising as none were heard at all here last winter. The Barn Owl appeared very early (16:29) possibly reflecting the extra pressure to find food. The last activity was a steady arrival of at least 11 Mallard, mostly arriving in pairs at last light.

Had an interesting report in work today off a mate that farms up near the Sennybridge range. He went out to collect a Sheep carcase that had died over the cold spell and saw a Ringtail Harrier feeding from it.Anyone else heard of Hen Harriers taking carrion?
