Yesterday's discovery of 40 Waxwings at the Co-op was exciting but frustrating as I was booked on an outing to Bath. They were gone when I briefly returned with a camera, but back as I drove off to board the coach at Gilwern. There in the garden beside the car park were five more Waxwings on half an apple. The Co-op sorbus has now been stripped of berries. There are two trees still berried and guarded by a Missel Thrush behind the electricity station and Penmaes School

For a moment I thought I'd found another Waxwing but soon realised that the plump big-headed short-tailed bird atop an Island Fields birch was a Hawfinch. It flew off towards Christ College. Also there a Brambling, c60 Siskins, 2 Kingfishers, a Water Rail, a Little Grebe and an Otter.

I am informed that ca 15 Waxwing roosted in the trees over the CoOp carpark, Brecon overnight - but soon flew off and no sign again at 9am.

3 x TTV along the Ceredigion/Brecs border today north of Llyn Brianne. Moving north away from what scant human habitation & agriculture there is, species diversity quickly reduced 12, 5, then a miserable 1. Most surprising were the occasional mixed flocks of BTit, CTit and Goldcrest moving through conifers with BT massively outnumbering the others. 34 BT in one party alone!! 2 Kestrel, 9 LTTit and 40+ Crossbill the other highlights. At least all the birds were in Brecs - half-hour scanning Ceredigion'shills & 'source of Afon Tywi' revealed nowt.

7 Teal at Brecfa Pool. Up on Myn. Fforest 150+ Fieldfare with a similar number on Llandefalle Hill where the wintering Kestrel was hunting (I've regularly seen another wintering Kestrel between Storey Arms and the reservoirs since 21.10.10). Several hundred Wood Pigeon were feeding near Bronlly Hospital.

A female Scoter, 6 Shovelers, about 50 Goldeneyes and more than a hundred Wigeon. In the big gathering of Lesser Black-backed and Black-headed Gulls, 3 adult and one 1st winter Common, an adult and first-winter Great Black-backed and an adult Yellow-legged. As the light faded thousand of Starlings flocked to the west end, followed by a Peregrine, Water Rails squealed, a Little Grebe trilled, a Tawny Owl hooted near the Hide and someone started shooting.
