Sighting location: Cwm Beusych. Sighting date: 27/07/10
Loose conglomeration of c.250 post breeding passerines in extensive tree plantings around farm in and around the cwm very difficult to analyse as young and old seemed "on a high" darting hither and thither: ID'd were Blue, Great and Coal Tit, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Siskin and Linnet. It was great to hear and see a male Yellowhammer singing lustily from gorse just below the moorland. Only two pairs of Redstart whereas in the GOS atlas survey 10 years ago I was seeing 50 pairs per upland tetrad - one of the same tetrads as then.

8 Ruddy Shelduck??? Pretty unmistakeable I think, but I'm no expert and wondering if anyone else can verify this?
Admin: Many thanks for your sighting Helen. These are South African Shelduck and there are normally 11 around the pool.

Sighting location: Black Mountains. Sighting date: 24/07/10
Final two TTVs of the summer completed around Mynydd Ddu. 33 species in one (2 hrs) and only 5 in the other (1 hr in moorland). Best were what appeared to be a family of Tree Creeper, families of Redstart, Whinchat, Willow Warbler, Siskin, Buzzard, Dunnock, G Tit, Swallow, C Crow, Magpie & GSWoodpecker. Sp Hawk carrying food, and a Goshawk came belting out of a conifer block to thump a poor innocent juvenile Buzzard that was struggling with the art of flight! A good time at the moment to confirm breeding for raptors, esp the begging calls of young in or around the nest.

Sighting location: Llanwrthwl. Sighting date: 23/07/10
Our swifts are gathering over the village each morning - 60 screaming around this morning. This usually happens shortly before they disappear south. A willow warbler sang this morning - the first time in a while. A couple of willow warblers in the garden this week is typical for the time of year - birds passing through. Also 7 lesser black backed gulls passed south down the valley.
