Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Mon 31st December 07, 01:30pm Sighting location: Glasfynydd Forest, Castle Drake, SN 869 246. Sighting date: 31st December 2007
Single Great Grey Shrike showed between 11:35 and 12:53 (still on view when I left). The bird seems to favour low perches (either bare brash or some of the small conifers near the block of half-grown Spruce trees south of the road). Despite at least two other visits this is the first time I have seen this bird since the initial discovery on the 23rd Nov (and suggests this is a different bird to that seen on Carms side of the Usk reservoir between these dates). Also 2 Snipe, Woodcock, 3 Crossbill, Bullfinch, 13 Fieldfare, Goldcrest and 40 Jackdaw,

Male Siskin at peanuts (the 30th species to use this garden since we arrived in Oct. Flock sizes increasing too with up to 20 Green, 15 Chaff and 7 Goldfinches lately). On Slwch Hill a male Brambling among Chaffinches and singing Mistle Thrush.

Pristine drake Pintail and Mandarin both present. Shame no sun to really appreciate them.

A bicycle powered early Xmas morning was incredibly rewarding. On the way up to the TTV site a spent root field at SN 923 299 had a flock of 70+ Chaffinch with at least 2 Brambling, 3 Linnet and c30 M Pipit with Crossbill calling at Cefn Rhosan wood. This was followed by the richest TTV so far: 37 species over a full (unplanned) 2 hours. Highlights were very healthy numbers of House Sparrow in the village (25+). Yet another large flock of Siskin (17+), uncountable numbers of Starling (500+) around and near Maesporth farm. With permission I then covered a Pheasant shoot area and was immediately greeted by a pair of Willow Tit (second "new" site in two days). Moving up to Cefn Twrch 15 Snipe were flushed. Just as I thought things were going to return to normal as I was descending I noted a pure white heron lifting out of the new duck/fish pools just west of Pentrefelin village. Size, dark legs and contrasting pale feet eliminated anything other than LITTLE EGRET. The bird flew up, apparently following the Usk river valley upstream until it was out of sight past Yr Allt, Sennybridge (I will need some advice from BTO RO/Brecs committee whether this should be included as a TTV species before I log it). Merry Xmas and a HNY!

Entry added by: Peter Seaman on Tue 25th December 07, 01:08pm Sighting location: Scethrog and Llangasty. Sighting date: 25th December (and a happy Christmas Day to all)
1. My neighbour here in Scethrog reports a falcon complete with bells frequenting the area. If anyone knows a falconer who has lost one, it may be worth a look around this area. 2. Can someone more expert than I, confirm that the white-headed Cormorant on Llangasty point is a juvenile? My modest reference book does not help.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Mon 24th December 07, 06:03pm Sighting location: Coed Ty-Mawr, Libanus, SN 97 23 and 97 24. Sighting date: 24th December 2007
Birds recorded (12:00-12:50) included Siskin 23, Bullfinch 4, Crossbill 8, Redpoll 2. By far the best record was a single Willow Tit - the first I have seen here since I started visiting this wood in 2003. Late news from Saturday 22nd Dec. A 2 hour TTV count of Forest Fach Sennybridge (SN92D) gave 26 species. Highlights were a single Woodcock, a flock of 8 Lesser Redpoll and Green Woodpeckers present/calling at 3 separate sites (probably territories). Only 2 birds were present on the semi-frozen unenclosed/top areas (M Pipit and Snipe).
