Entry added by: Andrew King on Sun 13th June 10, 10:32pm Sighting location: Llangynidr/Llangorse. Sighting date: 13/06/10
A return to familiar haunts after a hectic fortnight in Scotland. On my 15th year of walking identical Breeding Bird Survey (BTO) transect routes at Llangynidr yesterday, Redstart numbers were the highest yet and Tree Pipits are slightly below average. Both were feeding young in nests. Wren numbers are down significantly (but not as drastic as 'up north' as I saw/heard NONE north of Cumbria in 2 weeks!). Today at Llangorse, a Lapwing vigorously defended its single chick from Crows. Counts were 105 MSwan (+ 3 cygnets only), 330 Canada Goose (+40 goslings) and 10 Coot.

Barn Owls are performing well at the moment. One hunted Traeth Bach, Mynydd Illtyd on Friday evening (22:30) and one was seen in the Llia valley above Ystradfellte at 22:22 last night (new tetrad and 10km square Breeding Atlas records respectively). In addition, at Traeth Mawr there was no trace of any Water Rail activity and I have not heard one at any of the western sites since before last winter, a sign they have succumbed?. Also scarce this year, a family party of Marsh Tit were seen on SN92M today.
