Sighting location: Llanelieu, Talgarth 2hr TTV. Sighting date: 23/01/10
24 spp found spending some time in all the main habitats on the tetrad. Best were Treecreeper, Siskin, pr Marsh Tit, pr Mallard - and where the farmer feeds whole grains to sheep 170 Jackdaw, 30 CCrow, 10 Rook, 9 Stock Dove, 40 Chaffinch and 20 Yellowhammer. Finally it was all tears as what looked like the male Peregrine from a Bl Mtns territory ousted a juvenile female (his own 2009 daughter??) by mobbing, screaming and chasing her for 3-4 miles way north into Radnorshire. Byeee.

Sighting location: Tetrad SO22Q = Grwyne Fawr behind Sugarloaf and Partrishow Hill. Sighting date: 23/01/10
1st hour in the valley produced 21 spp but an odd mix - no thrushes apart from Blackbirds; no Wrens; plenty of Blue and Great Tits but no Long-tails and no Goldcrests; plenty of noisy corvids. . . . 2nd hour climbed Partrishow Hill to 500m to get the moorland birds except that there were few - only 10 spp - but 4 not seen down below. . . . I was hoping for a Bunting in the snowfields but no joy; I thought I heard Grouse but realised it was just my heartbeat reacting with my rasping breath - quite a realistic sound-a-like ! . . . I do wonder at the sense of trying to cover all habitats in 2 hours when the 2nd hour is unproductive and dilutes the average numbers for 2 hours; if I spent 2 hours in the valley I could double my numbers and no one would know as there is no facility to record what habitats one tried to cover.
