Gwent appear to have pinched "our" Great-northern Diver . . . reported today from Llandegfedd Resr . . . or is this old news ?

Entry added by: Paul Leafe on Mon 11th January 10, 07:31pm Sighting location: Just over the border.... Sighting date: 11/01/10
On birdguides today, there's a report of a possible 1st winter Bean Goose at Clifford (SO233456) which is only 1km from the Rads boarder! The Goose was seen with a flock of 250+ Canada Geese. I Quite often see a large flock of Canada Geese along the lower Wye, either in Rads or just over the border in Brecs. Surely worth a look for if your in the area. There's also a 'Taverners' Canada Goose in the flock (more than likely a hybrid!)

Birding from the car: Grey Wagtail in Brecon town centre by St Mary's bakery at 11:30am, then a male Blackcap in Hay, in garden shrubs at junction of Forest Rd and Castle Gardens, approx 12:15pm

black kite at Gigrin - having looked at it a few times it looks to have at least some characters of black-eared kite - recently given full species status having previously been considered an eastern sub-species of black.

In the midst of the madness of visiting 'snow boarders' Pen-y-Fan offered a wonderful opportunity to watch low flying Red Kites and Buzzards. I recorded 4 Kites and 2 Buzzards. Just as I was leaving, one Buzzard swooped right down in front of the car! Truly a wonderful sighting.

After a 3 hour search I finally located the roosting place of the reported Snowy Owl. It was an unusually large Barn Owl and also very, very white with only minimal brown colouring on its wings. Its mate was also there, which was of normal size and colouring. The bonus was that I now have a new site probably for breeding this coming year.

I too went up to Gigrin Farm today and can whole heartedly agree with Andrew (who I actually spotted from a distance). The spectacle is breath taking, like watching really impressive gulls at a tip, and the Black Kite is a truly beautiful bird, taking food from the floor and mobbing corvids within a few meters of the hides. Well worth the £4. How long before it wanders over the county boundary?

Gigrin Farm Kite Feeding Station. The juv Black Kite coming to food with 400+ Red Kite is worth a visit not just for the rarity, but for the spectacle. Black Kite gave good views along in front of the hides holding its own well against the competition. Roads fine, but be prepared to walk up the drive to the farm as it is a bit icy. 2pm feeding time.

Entry added by: Andy Davis on Sat 9th January 10, 01:01pm Sighting location: Usk rs.. Sighting date: 09/01/10
Re: the White chaffinch I reported over the past 12 months , it has now lost all the not usual white patterning and now resembles what a female chaffinch should look like. ..............Usk reservoir frozen except for a small patch around where the usk inflow is. A real lack of wildfowl... A cormerant did attempt a landing but soon flew back east.

Entry added by: Bryan jones on Sat 9th January 10, 12:56pm Sighting location: Llanwrtyd Wells. (SN876465) Sighting date: 09/01/10
Received a phone call early morning from a reliable source, that a Snowy Owl was in his garden on the ground, then flew into a tree before flying away. Spent best part of morning, roaming the area hoping for a sighting but no success. Anyone in that area, keep a lookout. Seen close to the A483 south side of Llanwrtyd.
