Ideal time for a tetrad bash - it's meant to be a winter count isn't it ? ! - - 1st hour along the river and canal; and the 2nd up the hill to 290m and back produced far fewer birds - - 29 species altogether - - including - 11 Great Tit, 32 Blue Tit, 2 Coal Tit, 2 Marsh Tit, 30 L-t Tit, 5 Nuthatch, 3 Treecreeper, 2 Coldcrest, 16 Robin, 7 Wren, only 2 Dunnock, 26 Blackbird, 2 Song Thrush but no Fieldfare or Redwing, 17 Rook cawing at their rookery, 5 Raven, all of 4 Wood Pigeon, 5 Chaffinch, 7 Goldfinch and 3 Bullfinch. . . Also 2 Dipper, 1 Goosander -- and 3 Mallard on the river as the canal was frozen over.

Very high numbers coming to feed, as it seems in most places. Chaff, Tits, are in 50/60s; 5Blabi;5 Dunnocks,3Robins,22 Hs,3 Nh;3 Jay' 12 Sg's;7Grefi; 3Gs; and several C and Mg in the chicken-run. Interesting to note that the SG's feed a lot on the Nyger seed. We have one Robin now who if the door is left open will fly straight inside and on to the table in the conservatory looking for crumbs, and will completely ignore the children unless they go too close. Once satisfied he'll make for the door and expect you to open it for him to go outQuite a character.

Not surprisingly, birds are in gardens at the moment! The hundreds that were on wildbird crops at Slwch pre-Christmas have reduced to a handful, but interesting watching them strip seeds from seed-heads above the snow. Brambling (1), 15 Reed Bunting, 6 Dunnock, 5 Bullfinch, 1 Goldfinch and 3 Chaffinch only.

At 13:00hrs my garden was visited by the usual guest birds, in addition, a pair of Dunnocks and a Song Thrush which was bobbing around the under growth, and a female Chaffinch.

Freezing conditions brought a Snipe to within 10yds of our window this morning, feeding for over an hour in the overflow from our well which remains un-frozen. Feeding again there this afternoon. Some high numbers at our feeding station recently, 7 Jay, 24 Blackbird, 4 Pheasant (all male), 4 Collared Dove, 6 Robin, 2 Carrion Crow, 35 Chaffinch, 16 Starling. Fairly normal numbers of B Tit, G Tit, C Tit, GSW, Nuthatch, Dunnock, H Sparrow. Tawny Owl calling at night.

A group of crossbills visited the feeders in my garden soon after sun-up today. Maybe because temperature dipped to -14°C with snowcover. They only stayed moments and went on to feed on larch cones nearby.

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Wed 6th January 10, 09:33pm Sighting location: Brecon / Felinfach. Sighting date: 06/01/10
A mixed flock of 10 LT tit, 5 Blue Tit and 4 male Bullfinch worked their way through scrub behind Morrison's. A Meadow Pipit was in Silver Street searching for food along garden walls and a Grey Wagtail was in Felinfach village.

I've enjoyed being entertained this morning by a party of Blue, Great, Coal and Willow Tits, and a Dunnock. But todays surprise was watching a female Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding from a block of lard only 1m away from the window!

To continue with the nestbox/roosting theme. Its my intention this year to check most of my boxes re: roosting as I have found in particular with Gt's that the box they roost in is invariably the box where I record their nest for the NRS and ringing schemes. They will roost there whatever the weather from around February onwards. It would be interesting to hear whether others who have boxes if this trend is normal in all areas or very localised. Another trend I have I've noticed thru' the NRS is that the boxes situated closest to my feed-station, those hatch some 2/3 days earlier than the other boxes. The above obviously needs much longer term data before any definite conclusions can be made.
