Lapwings, 79 in field by Pennorth turn from Llanhamlach and flocks of 9 and 137 at Llangorse. Single Kingfishers there and at Talybont, couldn't see Scaup or GND. Female Brambling, first of this winter, in my Brecon garden, Blackcaps still around.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Thu 31st December 09, 03:28pm Sighting location: Defynnog. Sighting date: 31/12/09
A male Merlin dashed through Defynnog church yard at 13:38 and perched on trees above r. Senni until 13:49 when seen off by 2 Jackdaws. Distant record shots of perched bird obtained. This could be the same Merlin seen near a finch feeding area (weedy swede field) below Cefn Llechid on the 26th Dec.

the Welsh Ornithological Society decided to switch to the Watsonian Vice-county system some years ago as the basis for bird recording in Wales and is followed in the annual Welsh Bird report - details in the report intro. saves record duplication etc.Surely best if where possible all flora and fauna schemes use the same fixed system which has been in place for 150 years? fits into national schemes and projects - also of course the national bird records should include the channel islands and isle of man -but thats another story!

Entry added by: Steve Jones on Wed 30th December 09, 08:39pm Sighting location: Llanwrthwl. Sighting date: 30/12/09
Woodcock - 3 flew out of streamside on road up to Penrhos this morning - the only bare patches of land due to heavy snow.

Entry added by: Andrew King on Wed 30th December 09, 05:52pm Sighting location: Talybont Reservoir. Sighting date: 30/12/09
Checked in the last hour of daylight - Scaup or GND not seen. Male Gadwall was unusual for this site, with regular Wigeon, Pochard, Tufteds, G/Eye, Coots, 2 MSwan and 9 Little Grebe. Arrivals to roost included 24 Goosander and 9 Cormorant, and at least 200 Greenfinch into the shrubbery on the dam. No Gull roost.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Wed 30th December 09, 05:11pm Sighting location: Epynt. Sighting date: 26/12/09
Epynt Starling roost has returned to the ammunition compound forest block after moving to Forestry Block D last year. I missed the start and there were already several thousand swarming to avoid the attentions of 3 Buzzards that were harassing them (at 16:10). 2 of the flocks seen arriving were at least a thousand strong so the numbers present are in the tens of thousands at least.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Wed 30th December 09, 05:01pm Sighting location: A40 west of Brecon. Sighting date: 30/12/09
An interesting drive from Brecon (A4) 15:30. At the Brecon cattle market a Buzzard was perched and a Bullfinch flew across the road. At Penpont a group of Starlings flew low across the road and one of these had much white (not pink but views were brief and fairly distant) on the wings and body so was probably a leucistic individual. Two Goosander flew up the Usk valley and were seen on two occasions (Penpont and just beyond Trallong turning).

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Wed 30th December 09, 03:32pm Sighting location: Talybont Res.. Sighting date: 30/12/09
The female Scaup is still about but elusive. No sign of the Diver. A drake Gadwall was with the Wigeon.
