There is a crow having a 'dust' bath in the GREAT BIG FLAKES of snow on the roof outside our office window..., earlier: 8 pigeons, 1 song thrush, 1 pied wagtail, pair of jackdaw and a blackbird

Entry added by: Mark Waldron on Wed 23rd December 09, 02:09pm Sighting location: Scethrog / Brecon. Sighting date: 23/12/09
Lots of cold weather movement with 21 species seen from my Brecon office window yesterday including small flocks of 5 Bullfinch and 8 LT Tit. Feeding in farmland around Scethrog today 30 Lapwing, 59 BH Gull and 30 Redwing but the undoubted highlights were a Little Owl and 3 Skylark.

for future ref - Dippers generally refurbish old nests and the only bit that would really need to be removed is the top of the dome (and only if it has collapsed and is obstructing the entrance). If more of the old nest has been removed, its no great problem as they will rebuild.

Clive - ref the Dipper box. Unless it all looks very fresh, dry material (Dippers are very early breeders and some may have refurbished nests by now), I would remove the majority of material leaving a small amount within. Thanks for re-erecting it.

Someone has removed a Dipper nest box from under the bridge by my house. I can refix it but it has an old nest in it-probably last years-should I remove that?

Entry added by: John Harper on Tue 22nd December 09, 05:48pm Sighting location: Llangattock Village and Coed Waen-dwrch. Sighting date: 22/12/09
About 50 House Sparrows scattered around the village, concentrating at dusk near the canal going by all the chattering. A quick walk through Coed Waen-dwrch from the canal / lime kiln at SO206174 suggested a concentration of various thrushes, especially Blackbirds, as well as several Robins, Wrens and a couple of Nuthatch and a Buzzard. Worth a wander through this sheltered wooded valley when you have time.

An unexpected heavy fall of snow here first thing. A snipe was flushed from a ditch behind the church - only ever seen here after snow. Best of all - 29 Lapwing flew west towards the Elan valley - my first record from the house in 9 years of watching. No doubt escaping the cold further east.

A dusk a bird was calling from the south side of the reservoir along the shore by the Dam wall. No idea what it was but I'm sure I've never heard a call such like before . A moderately loud call, low, grating, harsh, hollow but tuneful - and lasting around 8-10secs each time. I've been through all the sounds on birdguides with nothing near. A tease! around the res, earlier bullfinch flocks - around 10 birds in each, and plenty of goldcrest, crossbill on larch were the highlights.
