In woodland along the canal: - - c.20 Blue Tit; 5 Great Tit; 2 Marsh Tit; 3 Coal Tit; 13 Long-tailed Tit; 2 Wren; 2 Nuthatch; 1 Treecreeper.

WeBS count from Brynich to Brecon: 30 Goosander, considerably more than usual, 39 Mallard on river 186 on canal, 2 Swans, 5 Herons, 1 Little Grebe, pairs of Dippers at Brynich bridge and Island Fields

Sighting location: Beulah/Llanafan. Sighting date: 19/12/09
A 1-hr TTV in featureless sheep country near Beulah yielded only 14 species, but better success in a 2-hr TTV at Gornoeth, Llanafan. 25 species included 3 Woodcock, 16 House Sparrow (yes, surprising for up there!!), 3 Red Kite, 7 Lesser Redpoll, a Willow Tit and 35+ Crossbill, all of which were in a single flock of female/juvs on larch cones.

In the vicinity of the churchyard and graveyard: - - - 35+ Blackbird, most feeding on fallen apples; 7 Redwing; 2 Song Thrush; 5 Missel Thrush; 3 Robin; 3 Wren; 2 Great Tit; 5 Blue Tit; 1 Treecreeper; 3 Collared Dove; 1 Wood Pigeon; 9 Starling.

A Barn Owl hunted at dusk around the two horses at Island Fields. Earlier a total of 11 Goosanders flew down river, and four Cormorants, one wearing a green ring.

Sighting location: Brecon Sewage Works. Sighting date: 18/12/09
Roll up for the Wall of Death! A Chiffchaff was hunting minibeasts anti-clockwise around a large and deep circular tank, perching briefly on small pieces of moss growing on the vertical concrete wall. Pied Wagtails left on a heading just south of east, which would take them to the Llangorse reedbeds?

TTV SO 04H, east of road between Upper Chapel and Builth. 187 Golden Plovers on lower western slope of Banc y Celyn, 207 Starlings, 8 Crows, 4 Ravens, 2 Blackbirds, 2 Wrens, and single Kite, Buzzard, Snipe, Robin, Bullfinch, Mipit and Magpie.

Sighting location: Talybont Reservoir. Sighting date: 17/12/09
From layby near hide at midday: - - brief but good view of Great-northern Diver in middle of resr. ( it then took off and flew north to the other end of the resr. Also 2 Cormorant, 8 Coot, 4 Heron, 2 Mute Swan, 5 Teal, 8 Mallard, 1M Goldeneye, 7 Tufted Duck and a Sparrow Hawk.
