Twice recently a dark brown sparrowhawk has flown ahead of my car along the road between the Llangasty turn and Pennorth. It flew in short bursts, fast and low, perching briefly until I caught up before moving on again. I mentioned this at a talk last night and an ex-postman said that a sparrowhawk used to fly regularly along one stretch of road in front of his van. We agreed that these birds seemed to be using the vehicles to flush small birds as prey from the roadside hedges.

A Bittern took off from close to the hide as I opened the door to leave. If while in there I'd had the side flap open, I might have enjoyed excellent views. Photo'd a ringed Cetti's, and had brief views of yesterday's interesting Aythya, which has more obvious white on face and I think a paler greyer body than similar-sized Tufties. I need to see it better.

Distant in poor light a female Tufted type with a large white blaze. Not Greater Scaup, but possibly Lesser, or hybrid? - would have liked a better view. A Dunlin flew in with about 20 Lapwings. Otherwise usual wildfowl, a Curlew, gull and Starling roosts.
