Yesterday I noticed that a juvenile among 56 Black-headed Gulls in the Show Field was ringed. Could not read the large ring but grabbed a photo and sent it to Cotswold Water Park. Gareth Harris has replied that it looks like one of theirs - white ring with black number, letter, number, number. Also today and yesterday Kingfisher and Hobby

Sighting location: western Brecknockshire. Sighting date: 4th August 2008
A real change in the habits/habitats of western upland Brecknockshire. Over the last 18-24 months Gulls have become a common sight whereas prior they were rarely seen. Between 2001 & 2003 I didn't see a single Gull in this area .......... the area being Eppynt, Mynydd Mydfai, Usk Res, Crai Res, Glasfynydd......... Recently there have been up to 200 in just one flock, feeding on fields during the day, particularly around the slopes of the Eppynt, and roosting on the water of the 2 reservoirs........ This seems to be having a negative affect on the indigenous bird population with Red Kites, Buzzards and Ravens becoming scarecer....The Gulls, particularly the yellow legged and lesser black backed attack these birds with a ferocity that can leave individuals with injuries.
...... i don't know the reason for their sudden appearence, it started late 2006 when a pair of LBB gulls stayed permanently at the Usk res.......It may well be affecting other birds too, particularly ground nesting ones like the meadow pipit & curlew.
Could it be because of the open lanfill site at Dowlais which coincides which started to be used at the same time?

Sighting location: Usk res. Sighting date: 1st August 2008
Just to comment on a behaviour I haven't observed before, a pair of Swallows stayed montionless, like a kestrel, above the dam wall for minutes at a time, only to swoop around and regain the same flight. The wind was gusting to near 40mph with a mean of over 25mph and I guess they were feeding on flies swept up off the surface of the lake.
