A 5am circular walk out from Llangynidr towards Crick and back along the Usk was rewarding. On the canal a female goosander with a 9 strong family. Spotted Flycatcher, singing Song Thrush and large numbers of Wren, Blackbird, Great and Blue Tit. A heron was fishing near bridge 129. Bullfinch, Tree Creeper and Nuthatch, Chiffchaff and singing Blackcap. On the Usk excellent close up views of a female Otter near Worcester Cottage. Kingfisher briefly, Dippers in various locations including on the falls below Llangynidr Bridge which has in the last two days sadly become strewn with litter that can only have been placed and not washed downstream from elsewhere.

Recent Common Whitethroat reports. Great to hear of these farmland sightings by Alan (below) and Mark Waldron last week. Checking with Alan, his 5 are additional to the 6 territories I have logged over 2.5km of field hedges around Pennorth/Talyllyn. Rather than a function of lockdown working a local patch harder, these seem to be genuine increases. Rather different for Lesser Whitethroat with just one territory reported this spring (Bronllys) but that has always been scarce around the county.

Several barnacle geese with five or six goslings on the Acorn camp site, also at Llangasty last week a ringed plover on a rock car park side of the point.

Some wader passage still going on: adult Little Stint in breeding plumage (only the second spring passage sighting, most occur in autumn) and a Whimbrel calling heard from the garden at 11pm last night.
