In the field behind the hedge on the right after crossing the bridge from Llangorse Common, 60 Mallard - mostly eclipse drakes, a female Gadwall, and a small Curlew which I've seen here on every visit since 1 May. If this field stays wet it could be worth watching. 1 Common Sand at Llangasty.

2hr TTV before breakfast found 36 species, the best being a Kestrel, Goshawk, Whinchat, Yellowhammer, and single families of Green Woodpecker, Stonechat and Wheatear. At least two families of Redstart. Flocks of 30+ Goldfinch on thistle, and 18 Mistle Thrush on pasture with decent number of juvs, (adults only included in the Atlas count, of course).

3 Common Tern, 2 Tufteds, 1 LRPlover and a single YWagtail tonight. In the Crickhowell area over the last couple of days, 8 Crossbill flew purposefully, chipping, up the Usk Valley (the first I have seen of this urruptive species in 12 months) and a noisy family of Goshawk in woodland there.

What a wet night, 80mm of rain recorded between 18z & 06z. little birds none too happy, but when the sun came out pm, so did they, in their 100's. To cut it short, I've never seen so many warblers, well over 100 in just a few trees, flitting about preening, feeding etc. ...& a family of reed buntings also........................................ Earlier in the morning, at Usk res, 3 Sandpipers huddled up against the 'wall' of the dam wall, and 3 redshank on the south bank..................................................... Just an observation, a goshawk flew/glided south and then circled up...with 8/8 octas cloud cover it carried on up into the clouds and I guess beyond ...and didn't return....presumably to also dry off in the sun. Havn't noticed that behavior before.

I was surprised to see a Kingfisher enter a nest tunnel used earlier this summer, and another bird perched nearby, but I dusted off Rosemary Eastman's 1969 book to read that they have two or sometimes three broods.
