Pied and spotted flycatchers

Entry added by: John Harper on Sat 20th June 09, 09:35pm Sighting location: last report by Gareth. Sighting date: 20th June 2009
Comment for Gareth:- some groups of flies, such as hoverflies, are very depleted in quantity so far this year. On the other hand aphids (green, black, red, yellow, etc.) are abundant. But where are the ladybirds which eat them ? Methinks last year's ladybird paucity has been exacerbated by a hard winter so almost no adults to breed from until we get a massive immigration from the south.

Entry added by: Gareth Rees on Sat 20th June 09, 06:29pm Sighting location: Cefn Llechid. Sighting date: 20th June 2009
A pair of Wheatears have fledged 2 young at Cefn Llechid. Ideal habitat but this is the first time I have managed to get evidence of successful breeding over 7-8 years worth of visits. Also a Redstart nest with several well grown young (second NY status for a SN92 tetrad this June). Earlier 2 nestboxes in the upper Senni valley contained 6 and 7 Pied Flycatcher young, again very close to fledging. Last year at the same site there were similar aged broods of 5 and 6, but approx. 2 weeks earlier - an indication of how "late" this year's breeding season has been. Is this down to the slowed development of insects/invertebrates?.
